Our junior B footballers retained the mid junior B football title when they made a late surge to defeat Thurles Gaels last Wednesday evening. The opening quarter was even before Thurles Gaels made good use of the wind advantage to pull out a 1-3 to 0-2 advantage with 5 minutes remaining in the half. A James Griffin point before the break saw Upperchurch trail by 3. Within 5 minutes of the restart the sides were level as Upperchurch struck three points and then a Colm Stapleton free nudged us ahead. Gaels responded and 18 minutes into the half took the lead once more. However, it was to be all the Church men from then on as a point from a free was followed by a good finish from Michael Quinlan to the net for an Upperchurch goal. Two Ciaran Shortt points and a James Griffin free extended the lead to six before Pat Shortt closed out the game with 1-1 of his own. The goal coming from a penalty in the final minute. Final score was Upperchurch Drombane 2-13 Thurles Gaels 1-6. Time to celebrate is short as the county quarter final takes place tomorrow(Saturday). We face Carrick Davins in Fethard at 12pm.
